Today I want to write a review of the television series “The Expanse” by SyFy. I have watched the first season on Netflix and wanted to let you know what I think of it.

First of al, a small synopsis by

The Expanse is a thriller set two hundred years in the future, after mankind has colonized the solar system. A hardened detective (Thomas Jane, Hung) and a rogue ship’s captain (Steven Strait, Magic City) come together for what starts as the case of a missing young woman and evolves into a race across the solar system to expose the greatest conspiracy in human history.

So, did it deliver what was advertised? Yes. For me it has. And more too. The first episodes of the season lacked the finesse of a larger production with high-end actors. I have been spoiled by the quality produced in Game of Thrones and House of Cards, to name two big ones. But as you get into the story, the acting takes a back seat and the series becomes as addicting as, for example, The Big Bang Theory. I couldn’t stop watching it.

Would I recommend this series to anyone? No, not to anyone. If you like conspiracies, space opera’s and futuristic technology, then this is a series for you. If you’re not sure, watch some episodes of one of the Star Trek series first, to see if you’re into the space opera genre before you try The Expanse.

So to anyone who has not seen it yet, head over to Netflix. Or you can watch it on Amazon (for free on Amazon Video with Prime) or you can buy the season on DVD or Bluray. There is a second season but I haven’t seen that one yet.

As I’m writing this review, I see that the series has been derived from the books by James S.A. Corey, whom I didn’t know until now. If you prefer reading over watching, you can get his books on your favorite reading format. I will definitely add the books to my reading list.
